Physical Education here at Morpeth All Saints…

At Morpeth All Saints, our aim is to ensure all children enjoy and are engaged in Physical Education and Sport. Through Physical Education we aim to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing confidence and competence in a range of physical activities. We aim to improve health and well-being, promote active participation and lifelong learning, and for each child to fulfil their potential. We aim to ensure that the children’s experience of Physical Education is positive and motivating.

In physical education children develop their skills in gymnastics, dance, games and adventure play to develop good body co-ordination and control. We endevour to give each child enjoyment and satisfaction from physical activity and the opportunity to develop positive sporting attitudes. The children in our school carry out a minimum of 2 hours P.E. per week.

As a school we participate in many sporting competitions including football, netball, athletics, running and much more. We believe in healthy competition teaching the children to do their best and be gracious in victory and defeat. The school also runs a wide variety of clubs, some of which are led by coaches, teachers and teaching assistants.

NUFC foundation coaching

Coaches from the Newcastle United Foundation will be leading some PE lessons throughout the year for all classes within the school.

Competitions

As a school we like to provide opportunities for pupils to compete in as many competitions as possible. Keep up to date with up and coming sporting events on the schools website or in our ‘Fortnightly’ newsletter.

Intent:

At Morpeth All Saints we aim to ensure all children have a love of PE and physical activity and that they have the confidence and mind set to try skills. Physical education is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils. Children develop the skills, knowledge, and competence to excel in a broad range of sports and physically demanding activities. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their personal best and to feel proud of their achievements.

Children participate in a range of competitive individual and team sports, which build character and help to embed values such as fairness, respect, teamwork and aspiration. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and to be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. At Morpeth All Saints we believe all children can experience success both individually and as part of a team and through delivering a quality PE curriculum we seek to inspire children to become the best version of themselves as they develop the ability to adapt their skills in a range of sporting disciplines. Children develop the resilience needed to continually improve their performance as well as learning to find enjoyment in the process of physical activity as well as the outcome of sport participation. Our aim is that this will foster a love of physical activity that they will continue to pursue into their future lives outside of our school.

Implementation:

Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week. Participation in the Northumberland School Sports Partnership ensures up to date and high quality tuition for children and CPD for staff. Teachers teach, or team teach alongside coaches, planning, assessing, and monitoring children’s progress. A PE progression overview across school ensures that all children participate and experience a range of sports/skills and have the opportunity to build on and develop their skills progressively through their years at Morpeth All Saints.

Before and after school and lunch sports clubs are offered to both KS1 and KS2. Children are given the opportunity to take part in additional sporting competitions and taster sessions which provide further opportunities to develop a love of physical activity in its varied forms.

In Year 4 the PE curriculum is supplemented by their annual trip to ‘Robinwood’ where children enjoy a range of team building and challenging outdoor adventurous challenges, such as climbing, canoeing, trapeze and raft building. Other year groups also have the opportunity to develop their teamwork and resilient approach to adventurous and outdoor based physical activity through Commando Joe’s sessions, where children combine and apply what they have learnt about controlled movement, safe equipment use and team work to achieve different team goals.

Each term children are invited to complete personal best challenges. These are organised by our pupil school sports organising committee (SSOC). The SSOC meets regularly to plan and implement initiatives for the children based upon the views of our children. Pupil voice questionnaires are given out once per term. The results of these are analysed and acted upon. We hold many events throughout the year, such as our Santa dash fun run, where the children are able to demonstrate skills learnt and improve upon their personal best.

Equipment is thoroughly audited and replaced, and it is stored appropriately and as part of their lessons children are taught how to safely and effectively use the equipment to achieve their goals.

Teachers use regular movement and brain breaks throughout the day, including active maths, to ensure children are regularly being active.

In line with the Sainsbury’s School Games we hold an annual ‘Sports week’ where children will have the opportunity to try new skills/sports and develop and consolidate those skills previously taught.

Our PE curriculum is aligned to our school values and we aim for PE to develop the whole child both physically and emotionally

Impact:

At Morpeth All Saints we assess the impact of our PE curriculum in many different ways. This begins with the use of formative assessment within lessons and targeted feedback at the point of learning from teachers and coaches, to help children improve their outcomes. This is not solely related to their physical skill or ability in action but also in relation to their understanding of what they are doing through providing opportunity for quality talk and evaluation of skills during PE lessons.

Children’s starting points and progress through blocks is recorded through photos and short video clips of children participating in sports activities which is used in addition to teacher observations within lessons to inform their assessments. Outcomes produced by the children are assessed against the desired skills and knowledge relevant to the specific year groups. At the end of each term, judgements are made against end of year expectations, which inform next steps for cohorts. Ongoing assessment of children’s enjoyment and appreciation of the PE curriculum occurs through formal and informal pupil voice feedback.
