Art and Design here at Morpeth All Saints…
Art and D&T are taught as part of our broad and balanced curriculum and these skill based lessons cover all new National Curriculum objectives. Weekly lessons encourage children to develop their artistic and creative abilities within the whole of the curriculum and cross curricular opportunities are also offered. We ensure the children experience a wide range of knowledge and skill to develop a breadth of art techniques and skills. They are also encouraged to plan and manipulate a range of materials so that they can develop skill and originality. Children are encouraged to evaluate and appreciate their own work and the work of others in order to develop their appreciation of the arts. We are committed to the wider development of young people and encourage collaborations with professional artists and art organisations.
Intent:
We want Art and design to stimulate creativity and imagination. It will provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. Our children will communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Children become involved in shaping their environments through art and design activities. They will learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They will explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers locally, nationally and internationally. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. We want our children to understand that the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches their lives.

Art and Design in our school delivers a progressive development of skills and knowledge across all key stages.
At Morpeth all saints we achieve our intent through high quality weekly Art and Design lessons where the children explore local, national and international artists as their stimulus. They learn how to appreciate the artist’s work and the skills they have used and apply these within their own art work using high quality resources. The units are based on the areas of experience of Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, Textiles, and 3D. We use a range of cultural reference is equally wide – Celtic, Viking, Japanese, Australian Aboriginal and more. There is a constant inspiration from the work of a wide range of artists – Matisse, Bridget Riley, Patrick Caulfield, Chris Ofili and many others.
Impact:
At Morpeth All Saints we assess the impact of our art and design curriculum in many different ways. This begins with the use of formative assessment within lessons and targeted feedback at the point of learning, which is not solely the end product on paper but through the way children communicate about their understanding of art and design. Outcomes produced by the children are assessed against the desired skills and knowledge relevant to the specific year groups. At the end of each term, judgements are made against end of year expectations, which inform next steps for cohorts. Ongoing assessment of children’s enjoyment and appreciation of the art and design learning occurs through formal and informal pupil voice feedback.
